In this lesson, I will discuss the Windows logon process. The Windows logon process hasn't changed much from version to version. Meaning from Window 7 to Windows 8 to Windows 10. However, there are some things, as system administrators, you need to understand. What Windows is doing behind the scenes to make sure that you can log in to a system.

Run and RunOnce keys are run each time a new user logs in. RunServices and RunServicesOnce are run in the background when the logon dialog box first appears or at this stage of the boot process if there is no logon. These keys are for background services such as remote registry service and are run only once per boot. The scripts are held locally at c:\mi\scripts and all have the same permissions - there is not an access problem in either the user or SYSTEM context, because, well, the logoff and shutdown ones ARE working. There's not a network access permission issue, because they are held locally.

as you can see, the %clientname% returns my computer name (RNDEP) only when it is executed in the user session but not on the User login script by gpo.
